Tia Madden (b.1999) is an artist and writer based on Dharug land in the Blue Mountains. Her practice is concerned with the overlaps between drawing and writing, the poetics of illegibility, and the potential for abstract marks to behave communicatively when framed - or misread - as language. Through expanded drawing and installation, Madden explores language as a physical material and a spatial form, constructing spaces that are generative, poetic, and resist fixed interpretation. Her work calls on the speculative-fictional and archaeological to create and activate ‘uncoded forms’: signs not-yet or no-longer tied to a language system.

Performing fictions, Madden’s installations are speculative linguistic architectures - skeletons of language that she asks to act as vessels for communication, even if they only speak in worlds outside our own. Her work offers a space where meaning remains open-ended, indeterminate and resistant to control. Aligning with critical discussions on how meaning is formed, distorted or artificially imposed, she asks viewers to confront the possibility that language is temporary, unstable, and vulnerable to manipulation. In doing so, she looks to challenge the authority of interpretation, unsettling our ideas of how, where, and when meaning dwells in human-made marks.

Madden graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in 2022, and is currently undertaking a Master of Fine Arts by Research at UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture, examining the mutability of meaning at the intersection of drawing and writing. In 2023 she was selected for a one-month artist residency in Cairo, Egypt, which was supported by a grant from the Ian Potter Cultural Trust. This residency informed her first solo exhibition, Some Sort of Notation, which was held at Firstdraft in 2024. As well as exhibiting widely, Madden was the winner of the 2024 Kudos Emerging Artist Award, was awarded highly commended in both the 2023 Gosford Art Prize and the 2023 Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, has been featured as a finalist in various prizes including the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA) and the M16 Drawing Prize, and is one of eight finalists in Gosford Regional Gallery’s Gosford Emerging 2025.
